How can single-family home neighbourhoods become future-proof?

18th Transformation Dialogue of the Federal Bauakademie Foundation

Single-family home neighbourhoods across many cities are undergoing a profound shift: populations are ageing, households are getting smaller, car dependency remains high, and land and resource consumption is significant. At the same time, these areas hold considerable potential. Existing houses and plots can be reused, extended, shared, retrofitted for energy efficiency, and reconfigured in diverse ways - turning monofunctional residential areas into more mixed and vibrant neighbourhoods.

Under the title “Rethinking Conversion: How Can Single-Family Home Areas Become Future-Proof?”, this transformation dialogue explores how these neighbourhoods and housing types can be developed in a more inclusive, diverse, and resource-efficient direction.

The dialogue will also address how perceptions of the single-family home as a central place of living are changing. Can a house be more than the private shell of a nuclear family? What new forms of housing emerge when property, neighbourhood, care work, and living are no longer organised purely on an individual basis? And what support is needed to turn individual transitions into a broader, intentional transformation?
