New European Bauhaus Germany
New European Bauhaus
The New European Bauhaus (NEB) was launched by the European Commission in 2020 to make the objectives of the European Green Deal visible and socially impactful. The initiative connects ecological transformation with cultural and social responsibility and sets new standards for building culture, living environments, and coexistence in Europe.
At the heart of the NEB lies a guiding vision that integratively combines sustainability, aesthetics, and inclusion. This triangle of objectives forms the foundation for projects, processes, and experiments that aim to shape cities, regions, and our lifestyles in a future-oriented way. Rather than promoting standardized solutions, the initiative fosters innovative, place-based approaches that reflect Europe’s cultural, social, and ecological diversity.
In addition, four thematic axes guide all NEB activities:
- reconnecting with nature,
- regaining a sense of belonging,
- supporting vulnerable places and groups,
- shaping a circular industrial ecosystem and promoting lifecycle thinking.
The NEB follows a participatory and transdisciplinary approach. It addresses stakeholders from academia, arts and culture, public administration, politics, business, and civil society, inviting them to jointly develop and implement new ideas. The initiative thrives on the engagement of its community and on European exchange across disciplines and national borders.
“The New European Bauhaus movement is intended to build a bridge between science and technology and the world of art and culture.” — Ursula von der Leyen, Brussels, 14 October 2020.
National Contact Point (Policy)
The New European Bauhaus Policy National Contact Point (NEB Pol NCP) serves as the central point of contact in Germany for communicating, promoting, and advancing the values of the NEB. Since December 2025, it has been hosted by the Federal Foundation Bauakademie, which supports the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building in implementing the NEB agenda in Germany.
Over the coming years, numerous measures are planned to strengthen the New European Bauhaus in Germany — including connecting existing initiatives, supporting and showcasing projects, and establishing key communication channels.
The contact point is currently under development. We are continuously expanding our activities and warmly invite you to accompany us on this journey.

Are you looking for funding opportunities to develop projects that make our neighbourhoods — in both urban and rural areas — more sustainable and liveable? The NEB Facility provides funding with an annual volume of approximately €120 million. You can find further information through our colleagues at the New European Bauhaus Research & Innovation National Contact Point (NEB R&I NCP), who offer guidance and support during the application process.
In addition, the NEB Prizes are awarded annually across several categories, with prize money of up to €30,000. Learn more here and discover the prize winners from previous years.
The NEB Academy (NEBA) was established in 2022 as an extension of the NEB initiative. It aims to provide new impulses for skills development and education in sustainable construction across all levels of the building sector. In Germany, the development of a NEBA Hub in the Berlin-Brandenburg region is currently led by our colleagues at Bauhaus Erde. General information about the NEB Academy can be found here.
Depending on the stage of your project, you can make use of NEB Tools — including the Compass, Investment Guidelines, checklists and more — to help align your work with the values of the New European Bauhaus. You can find the available tools here.
