Blue-Green Expert Talks
As part of Treffpunkt Bauwende, the Federal Bauakademie Foundation and the Berlin Rainwater Agency jointly invite you to three expert talks. Together with exciting guests, key aspects of blue-green building will be discussed - from water-sensitive neighbourhoods and the blue-green transformation of existing building stock to cross-property rainwater management.
The format: Each 90-minute talk will begin with short presentations from four guests followed by a moderated discussion. The presentations will provide context and insights into current approaches and experiences from Berlin and across Germany. The aim is to highlight key challenges and solutions in a compact, practice-oriented manner and to foster interdisciplinary exchange across sectors and cities.
Each dialogue will be followed by a 30-minute guided tour of the exhibition “Treffpunkt Bauwende: Blue-Green Construction” on the grounds of the Federal Bauakademie Foundation.
# 1: Water-Sensitive Neighbourhoods in New and Existing Urban Areas
Large cities need more housing - while also requiring future-proof approaches to rainwater management. This talk focuses on how neighbourhoods can be planned and developed so that rainwater is retained and used as a local resource.
It presents two new development districts in Berlin and Mannheim as well as approaches for transforming existing neighbourhoods into more water-sensitive urban environments. The discussion will cover practical solutions- from planning and design to operation and monitoring of decentralised systems - as well as broader research questions and international comparisons.

# 2: Blue-Green Transformation of Existing Buildings
Adapting existing buildings in a water-sensitive way is essential for a climate-resilient city - but also particularly challenging. This talk focuses on strategies, operational concepts, and framework conditions for integrating blue-green measures, including under complex conditions such as heritage protection, competing uses, and limited space.
Using practical examples and research projects, the talk shows how technical, design, and functional requirements can be combined - and what added value they bring for urban climate and quality of stay.

# 3: Cross-Property Rainwater Management
Water does not stop at property boundaries. Where individual plots reach their limits, networked solutions open up new potential: rainwater can be used where it is needed most.
This talk focuses on the conditions and possibilities of such neighbourhood-based cooperation. It addresses planning, legal, and economic aspects as well as practical implementations of pilot projects and the potential for the future Bauakademie building.
